Over the past few days, I did something I genuinely never thought I’d do again - I posted several videos of myself on a public platform.
At first, I was honestly terrified. The internet, especially TikTok , can be a brutal place. Because of this, going into it, I was expecting hate or judgment. But so far? All I’ve received is kindness and compliments. That completely surprised me.
Why It Matters
For a long time, I have avoided putting myself out there online. Past experiences, seeing innocent people receive hate and fear of criticism has held me back. But recently, I’ve started to push through that fear. I feel somewhat empowered and proud of myself for moving past my own insecurities.
My Content (For Now)
Right now, my TikTok is a kind of venting space; somewhere I post about things I’m feeling or going through which can also be seen as ‘relatable content’. While I’m not yet comfortable sharing this space of mine, I’ve come a long way.
Maybe someday it could turn into something bigger, but for now, it’s just a personal outlet and a bit of fun.
What Is ‘Relatable Content’?
Relatable content is defined as something a large audience of people can easily relate and/or connect to. This means that there’s a very wide range of situations, feelings and struggles that can be referred to. A lot of the time, on TikTok, people try to make their scenario fit with the lyrics of whatever song they may be using. Here is an example: https://www.tiktok.com/@ashleyb4253/video/7186413665019677998?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7527283246469694998
My Inspiration
Ashley Barnes is someone who has really inspired me over the past year. She’s my age and has helped me feel less alone just by doing something as simple as posting and being real online. She’s also faced a lot of online bullying which is something that really upsets me. I’m planning to write more about that in another blog because it ties deeply into mental health and how social media can affect people, especially the younger generations who have grown up with it.
On Bullying
Bullying infuriates me. It puts down so many people, including myself, and prevents people from even attempting to put themselves out there. I won’t allow it to control my life any longer and you shouldn’t either.
I have big dreams in life, as I’m sure most people do, and I’m determined to give my best efforts into everything. I believe in myself. I believe in you.
